How to choose brushes for painting

The brushes are an indispensable attribute of painting. Although not always! In the modern world it is possible to paint without them. However, while mastering classical painting you cannot do without high quality brushes.

As a matter of fact, fluid art is absolutely self-sufficient without any brushes. For painting in Jackson Pollock’s style of abstract expressionism no brushes are necessary. However, for creating oeuvres in the Impressionist manner this will hardly be possible.

The brushes

So how should one choose brushes for painting to create a masterpiece?

The main thing you should know about brushes is that they can be made either of natural or synthetic bristle, also they vary in size and can be round and flat. Regarding the choice of their size everything is quite simple. The more detailed painting style you prefer, the thinner brushes you need. For acrylic painting it is better to choose brushes with artificial bristle because natural brushes will not resist the strain of acrylic for a long time. However, for watercolours it is better to choose round brushes made of natural bristle. We like squirrel and kolinsky.

For Japanese painting techniques in drawing ink the artists use badger fur brushes which are extremely soft. However, for Ukrainian Petrykivka painting technique the best option is ‘koshatka’ (a cat hair paintbrush). However, searching for it will resemble a real quest.

The brushes

One of the most expensive kinds of brushes is made of kolinsky red sable – the fur of a Siberian weasel (a small predator). Such brushes are suitable for any kind of painting. The main thing is to make up your mind concerning the size. It is better to take one medium and one small brush. With time you will find out which kind of brushes is more convenient for you to paint with and thus extend your personal assortment of brushes.

While choosing brushes it is necessary to pay attention to their tips. It is better if they come in a special original manufacturer’s case. If at the stage of purchase the tip is frayed, it is better not to buy it as painting with it will not be convenient.
