Everyone can learn how to sculpt in clay

It turns out that sculpting with your hands is quite simple and anyone can learn it. Clay is a very soft and pliable material that easily takes the shape you give it.

But where to start? We addressed this question to Svitlana Bazylevych, head of the «Lihtaryk» art studio:

Any work with clay begins with its kneading. Well-mixed clay is half the battle. And then you give the clay the look you want with your hands: a cup, a vase, a pitcher, a candlestick are the simplest shapes that can be made in one master class. These things are produced in one step. Only the handle is attached to the cup later, when the product itself dries a little. And teapots or Turks are the complex creations that must be made in several stages.

We start sculpting from childhood

You can meet people of any age at the workshops at «Lihtaryk» art studio: adults come here together with children. That is why we clarify whether there are age restrictions for starting sculpting classes?

There are no such restrictions, children start sculpting already after a year, but it is better to use salt dough at an early age, says Svitlana. – It is safe to start sculpting various clay figurines for children from the age of 4. For the smallest ceramists, we have a mini-group with no more than 6 children, where children from 4 to 6 years old learn to sculpt from clay. But you can start working at the potter’s wheel from the age of 6 at group or individual pottery master classes. This is related to the safety rules.

Children in «Lihtaryk» art studio are especially interested, because just imagine their emotions when a certain creation is born from an ordinary piece of clay during a modeling clay lesson: a plastic figure of a lamb, an angel, a cat or a cartoon character.

Our sculpting clay classes are adapted for children. In this way, every child can maximize their potential and benefit from working with clay.

Our group pottery workshops are held in mixed groups. This allows you to make the atmosphere more creative and relaxed. Children feel themselves more grown up in such groups, and adults, on the contrary, become children for an hour and a half, giving free rein to their imagination and creativity.

Individual pottery classes are suitable for a deeper immersion in pottery. In addition, individual pottery workshops are very popular as a romantic date.

Choosing where to go in Kyiv and coming to our pottery workshop with your friends is an ideal option for celebrating a birthday. We really appreciate it when you come to us to celebrate your important events.

Important tips: how to sculpt clay

It is possible that after the pottery master classes at «Lihtaryk» you will have a desire to start sculpting at home. The first question you may be facing is where to get the clay.

You can buy clay for home creativity in our studio, – says Svitlana, – because professional potters usually buy it in large quantities or prepare it themselves (this is a complicated and long process). You can buy several kilograms of clay from us, which will be absolutely enough for home creativity.

A few more valuable tips for those who want to learn how to sculpt in clay:

  • When working with it, make sure that your hands are always wet. For this, a bowl of water should be nearby. Clay dries quite quickly, so it should be stored in an airtight package;
  • It should be remembered that clay is a material that can be used many times. If you are tired of a plastic figure, you can soak it and mold something new. But this is possible only with things that are not burned in the oven;
  • Clay products are quite fragile, which means that they must be handled with care.
  • Fired clay products become utensils and are suitable for household use. Firing should be done in a professional kiln. You can order firing at our studio after the master class.

Hand sculpting of dishes in clay is available to everyone. In order to sculpt with clay, you need a minimum of materials: clay for sculpting, stacks, lace or plants for imprinting patterns on clay. An important stage is the preparation of clay for modeling. Modeling clay must be well kneaded to minimize the possibility of cracks in the dishes after the firing.

Clay modeling for adults takes place regularly in Kyiv. All of our pottery workshops are held almost every day and include clay modeling and pottery on the wheel.

What things can be made with clay?

With clay, you can make plates, candlesticks, figurines, stands for scented candles and many other options, which an experienced potter will tell you about at a clay modeling master class in Kyiv. Sculpting figurines requires attentive and careful work. The color of the clay from which we sculpt at our master classes is white or red. But remember the fact that white clay easily washes off clothes, unlike red clay. So in order to protect your clothes, we provide aprons to all participants.

What kind of clay is used for modeling?

Two types of clay can be used for hand sculpting: pure potter’s clay (this is what we use in our pottery workshops) and chamotte (fireclay). The composition of the clay is ecologically clean. Pottery clay and its properties allow you to use clay for sculpting and making utensils, firing your art results in the oven and to use it in everyday life. Sculpting clay for beginners is an exciting activity, and even without experience you can make your own things with clay.

A potter will tell you how to work with clay at our master class and help you to make simple things with clay for beginners.

Unlike molded clay dishes, clay figurines are difficult to fire. There may be air bubbles in the clay figurines, which can lead to cracks in the figurines in the kiln. When we sculpt flat dishes with our hands, the air literally rolls out of the clay as you roll the clay into a flat shape.

Preparation of clay for modeling consists in mixing the clay well in order to remove all excess air from it.

If you do not have the opportunity to attend a master class in the studio, we suggest paying attention to our online master classes, as well as gift certificates from our studio.
