Acrylic is a technique of painting and a kind of water-dispersion paints, which use special thermoplastic polymers – polyacrylates. Acrylic paints are also widely used in construction during finishing works.
Acrylic has relatively recently appeared in the creative arsenal of artists and very quickly competed with traditional oil and watercolor paints. Its history dates back to the discovery in the late 1920s by German chemist Otto Rem of polymethyl acrylate, a durable transparent plastic known as plexiglass. In 1933, Remus invented a method of diluting solid polymer resins with solvents, and this led to the appearance of the first acrylic paints.
In the mid-1930s, Americans Leonard Bocour and Sam Golden set up a company to produce art materials. Initially, they were engaged in the manufacture of traditional oil paints, but later they became interested in polymer dyes. In 1947, they invented the first artistic acrylic Magna paint, made from an organic solvent – turpentine. Thirteen years later, they were able to develop water-based acrylic paints that went on sale under the Aquatec brand. Since then, artists received new material for creativity.
The advantages of acrylic were appreciated by representatives of various arts: pop art, abstractionism, hyperrealism, art deco, postmodernism and more. The technique of acrylic painting is perfect for writing original bright paintings. And from the 60s of the last century to the present day, acrylic is one of the main techniques in modern painting.
The advantages of acrylic paints are:
In addition, acrylic paints mix perfectly, and you can get many shades of base colors. They can be used in mixed media, create a variety of textures by adjusting the amount of water.

Among the disadvantages of acrylic is that the paint applied to the ground darkens slightly over time, and due to the rapid drying, it is sometimes quite difficult for the artist to make adjustments to the work and correct mistakes.
But due to the large number of advantages, acrylic paints are valued by artists and have gained popularity in workshops at the art studio «Lihtaryk». With their help you can create unique abstract paintings in the technique of Fluid art.
Fluid art is a technique of abstract art, which uses acrylic paints in liquid form. This is an exciting and fairly simple way to create unique paintings. Acrylic paints, pre-diluted with liquid medium, interact with each other, creating interesting and visually organic motifs.
Despite the fact that the popularity of fluid art has grown recently, the first experiments in the technique of liquid acrylic have been conducted since the 1930s. Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros unexpectedly discovered unusual effects during the interaction of flowing paints with each other and called the result «random painting».
Siqueiros liked the aesthetics of such painting, he saw in the works a synergy between science and art, complexity and beauty. His fascination with the effects of liquid paints led him to learn the science of hydrodynamics.
The technique of «random painting» became the basis in the works of many famous artists. Inspired by Siqueiros, Jackson Pollock, who once decided that it was not necessary to use conventional techniques to paint, became one of the most prominent representatives of expressionism. In his opinion, with the help of abstraction you can express many more ideas. Acrylic paints are perfect for Pollock’s famous «drip» paintings. He actively used his favorite technique in creating his large-scale abstract works.
Using acrylic paints, proponents of abstract expressionism in their work relied entirely on unconscious, free from the laws of logic and control of the mind creativity, completely abandoning the image of real world objects.
The fluid art technique is perfect for depicting space motifs. After all, the combination and gradients of colors allow you to create paintings similar to photographs from the space. Such works attract your attention.
At the master class on liquid acrylic, the master of the art studio «Lihtaryk» will help you to choose the necessary shades to create a background for the image of space and place them correctly on the canvas. At the final stage, the stars and sections of the Milky Way should be drawn. Moreover, you can choose your own theme and we will help you every step of the way. You will definitely like the result.
Textile acrylic paints are used in a master class on painting bags or T-shirts. Working with acrylic does not require creative experience, and the result is fascinating and inspiring!
