You will be able to learn about these and other interesting facts and secrets of the unique technique, which is included in the intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO, at our individual master class on Petrykivka painting. Master classes are held regularly at the «Lihtaryk» art studio on Pechersk in Kyiv.

Petrykivka originated in Ukraine in ancient times with the tradition of decorating houses with ornaments, which, according to their owners, contained magical power that protected them from troubles. Petrykivka painting has become an integral part of Ukrainian life. People, building wattle and daub houses painted them with floral designs, creating a whole artistic ensemble, because not only the interior of the house was decorated, but also the exterior facade, as well as household utensils.

The painting is based on bright and positive colors. The main element of Petrykivka ornaments is a flower, as a symbol of nature. Most often, masterpieces of folk art are decorated with mallows, peonies, asters, wildflowers, as well as those thought up by the masters themselves. In this way, a unique pattern appears on the walls, pictures or dishes.

Traditionally, a white background was used in Petrykivka painting, but today artists often depict the ornament on a colored background. Previously, folk craftsmen used natural paints – juices and decoctions of plants. In the 20th century, they were gradually replaced by aniline dyes. In the post-war period, gouache and watercolor became common paints in Petrykivka painting.

At an individual master class on Petrykivka painting, you will have the opportunity to paint a wooden board with acrylic paints, which will remain as a memory for you. All materials for creativity are provided by the Lihtaryk art studio. We will use traditional cat brushes – made of cat hair. And under the guidance of the master, you will create your unique drawing in traditional Ukrainian technique.
